Why Students Plagiarize
Posted date: Nov 20, 2018
Many people think that plagiarism is copying artwork or borrowing the original idea of another person. However, terms such as "copying" and "borrowing" do not reproduce the content of this phenomenon. Plagiarism occurs when someone uses the words, ideas, statements, information or illustrations of another person, but does not recognize this fact. The non-reference text is also considered to be plagiarism. If ideas are borrowed from another source and references are present, but the text is a direct quote from this source, without quotation marks, the reference itself does not exclude plagiarism. The text should have inverted commas to indicate that the ideas were borrowed. Read these tips for college students to understand how to avoid plagiarism.
What Things Are not Considered Plagiarism
According to the law, there are several cases where the use of previously published text is not considered plagiarism. They include:
- well-known facts;
- widespread ideas or definitions;
- paraphrase phrases in your own words when translating from a dialect or other language, unless there is a well-known phrase or official translation;
- notification of news of the day or current events that have the character of ordinary press information;
- works of folk art (folklore);
- official documents of a political, legislative, administrative nature issued by official bodies within their authority (laws, decrees, court decisions, state standards, etc.) and their official translations.
How to Avoid Plagiarism
Follow the rules of citation and check the references. Be independent. Express your thoughts. Look for your style. Be courageous and self-confident! Do not be afraid of criticism or remarks. Do not be afraid to defend your own point of view. Feel free to enter the discussion. If you do not know something or something is wrong, teachers and classmates will help you.
Independence is a sign of a strong, self-assured personality. An independent person will not force others to do what she or he can handle with. Such people determine their own life path, make important decisions, boldly move forward and develop. Moreover, at the same time, they value and respects the thoughts of others (their friends, parents, and teachers).
Find Your Style
Sometimes it seems to you that it is better to borrow thoughts and sayings from books, because they are written in a good language, and you cannot write like that. After all, the formation of your literary style is a painstaking and long process. It is impossible to learn how to write professionally in a short period. This process requires patience and effort. However, the results are worth the effort. This means that people will begin to recognize you as the owner of a special style. What do you need in order to find your writing style? Of course, you have to read different books as much as possible. When we read, we enrich our vocabulary, learn new words, expressions, and discover new information.
You need to try to write essays more. If you have time and desire, you can create your diary. This diary can be conducted only for yourself, but you can present it for a wide audience too. Of course, you can try to express your thoughts on the social networks in which you are registered. For example, if you have been to some exciting trip, you can share your experiences with your friends. Maybe, you read an exciting book or watched a new movie. Tell your classmates about it. Do you have a younger brother or sister? Why not write interesting fairy tales for them?
How to Cite Correctly
Often, quotes are separated using inverted commas. After each quotation, you must indicate the source from which you take it. The scientific article must necessarily refer to the sources and have the list of used publications after the conclusions of the text. If information, materials, or statements from monographs, review articles, and other sources with a large number of pages are used, the reference must accurately specify the page numbers, illustrations, tables, etc. from the source to which it is given. The reference in the text is usually made at the end of the sentence. The quotation must be written in quotation marks and need to refer to the source with the specified page number. Quotes are usually used to confirm the writer’s arguments as a reference to an authoritative source for a critical analysis of one or another statement. In other cases, it is better to use indirect quoting. Scientific ethics requires accurate reproduction of the cited text, since the least reduction of the given extraction may distort the content. The citation must be complete, without any reduction of the author's text and distortion of the writer's thoughts.
Why is it important not to plagiarize? There are some situations when you are limited in time. Moreover, it is hard for you to resist the temptation to download an essay from the Internet or write it off from one book. Of course, it is very easy to do this. However, by acting in this way, you will deprive yourself of the vast amounts of knowledge that most likely could be useful to you in your future life.
